September Online Workshop
Discovering Disabled Forms and Structures

August 11, 2026

On September 12th we’re excited to have Sarah Fawn Montgomery leading a webinar/workshop for SmokeLong Fitness. Even if you’re not participating in SmokeLong’s year-round community workshop. You can still attend. If you’re a workshop leader or a teacher of creative writing, you can request a free ticket. Simply send us an email: editor@smokelong.com

The writing workshop is a space where power and privilege often demand disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent writers translate our lived experiences for abled audiences in order to be valued. Embodying ableist expectations is an act of erasure that injures disabled spirits and silences disabled stories. But turning to disabled bodies and minds can be a source of great inspiration and innovation. In this interactive seminar for writers of all genres, we will explore strategies to help writers discover disabled forms and structures for creative work. We will intersperse lecture and discussion with short, low-stakes writing exercises to consider various disabled forms and structures you might employ in your work, encouraging you to reflect on how and why this approach to writing might tend to both your body and body of work.

Date: September 12th
Time: 10am NYC
Duration: 90 minutes
