
We forget that the core element of flash fiction—compression—is frequently used in novels, not just novels-in-flash, but any longform manuscript benefits from understanding how compression works and when to use it. This session will look at contemporary examples and walk writers through steps to discern when and how to compress a novel.

Sherrie Flick is the author of a novel, a longform essay collection, and three story collections. Her most recent story collection, I Have Not Considered Consequences, was published by Autumn House Press in April 2025. She served as co-editor for the Norton anthology Flash Fiction America, series editor for The Best Small Fictions 2018 (with guest editor Aimee Bender), and is a senior editor at SmokeLong Quarterly. She spent spring 2025 at Davidson College as the McGee Distinguished Professor in Creative Writing and will be fall faculty for the West Virginia Wesleyan low-res MFA program. She lives in Pittsburgh.
