Smoke and Mirrors: An Interview with Alexandre Correa

Was there a specific inspiration for “Dans le bus” or how did the imagery and story come to you?

« On the bus » was imagined… on the bus, in a Swiss city where I go for work (my other work, the one which allows me to feed my family), while seated across from an old woman holding her cane.

More generally, what impulse most often gets you writing? Or, said another way, how do stories come to you?

Life is a flood of stories, and I have trouble writing down all the ones that run through my head. But I look forward to the day when I won’t feel the need to write these stories down.

Is this small piece part of a longer work or a longer series? If yes, can you tell us about the project? If not, can you tell us about something you’re working on right now?

No, « On the bus » is not part of a larger literary project. I’m currently writing a story which makes us believe we are looking at one thing when in fact we are looking at something else, that we are active when in fact we are doing nothing, etc. But I’m not far enough into it to say more…

I always want to know what people are reading, what books are you currently enjoying and what books do you « carry » with you all the time?

Emmanuel Carrère, The Kingdom / Virginie Despentes, Vernon Subutex / Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness / Bergsveinn Birgisson, Letter to Helga. And then I always still reread certain books (all of Michel Houellebecq, and Cormac McCarthy, The Little Prince, all of Hemingway, all of Fitzgerald, all of Rimbaud, and the Autobiography of Lemmy from Motörhead and a thousand other things). There is no method to my reading madness.
