1. Next of Kin by Jo Gatford
I’ve chosen Please Leave A Light On When You Go by Brittain Ashford and Dave Malloy because it sounds like it’s played on a shonky old pub piano at the tail end of a wake when almost everyone’s gone home… I also like the idea of the ‘you’ of the story deciding to leave a light on in the narrator’s house when they’ve finished with their next of kin responsibilities because they can’t bear the thought of leaving it in darkness.

I love stories with a strong sense of place and music that transports with story. I found myself listening to songs like this when writing “Head On.”
3. Mad Dog, 1988 by Anna B. Moore
To accompany “Mad Dog, 1988,” I’d like readers to listen to “Fools Gold” by Stone Roses.
4. The Arithmetic of Snails by Alex Brenner
My selection is “I Will Follow You into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie. I think this song pairs well with my story because it captures the thoughts and feelings that surround a loved one’s death without being overly sentimental.
5. Undercurrents by Gillian O’Shaughnessy
Una Mattina by Ludovico Einaudi: It translates to A Morning, and I like the double meaning that implies when paired with “Undercurrents”. It has a lilting movement that echoes the ocean, a haunting quality and a gentle beauty that feels elemental. I think it reflects the ocean when the beach is deserted, on a grey day when the sea seems bigger than the whole world, and feeling small in comparison is a comfort.
6. Tripta’s Recipe: Fish Cooked in Mustard Sauce by Damyanti Biswas
My choice would be De Novo Adagio by Alicia Keys. I like it because it begins so tentatively, then gets into the flow, and ends on a soft note, quite a lot like my writing–I’m very tentative when I begin, but gain confidence as I write. I have this one on loop when I’m writing first drafts.
7. Inheritance by Grace Q. Song
I love “End Credits” because it’s quite slow, which fits the mellow tone of my piece, and the beginning few notes remind me of droplets/water. Toward the end, the music does become faster and takes on a slightly darker melody, but I suppose it would fit the tensions between the father and daughter?
8. Checking for Ticks by Nadia Born
Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons: Spring 1. I adore this short-and-sweet recomposed melody. I have trouble putting my finger on the emotions it inspires: joy, loss, a little of everything. I listened to this piece as I was finishing my micro story.
9. No Such Thing as Quiet by Matt Barrett
I think “Once in a Lifetime” works really well for its lyrics. “You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack/ And you may find yourself in another part of the world.” To me, that’s what’s happening to the man in my story. It’s like he’s waking up to this unexpected world around him, and he’s wondering, just like the song says, “How did I get here?”
10. Moments of Anticipation by DJ Hills
My choice is “On the Floor Beneath the Cross.” This track creates a mood that at times complements, and at others is in opposition to, the tone of the story; on par with the narrative’s own internal tensions.
11. A Feast in My Honor by David Hansen
My choice is “Hiders” by Burial. There’s a mood that’s really precious to me, and Burial has a handle on it, especially in this song. In fact, you should probably skip my story and just listen to “Hiders” instead.
12. Onion Heart by Rupert Dastur
“Earth” by Sleeping At Last. The song captures a sense of pain, resilience, beauty, and hope. Perfect music to describe Earth, but also the narrator in Onion Heart. Perhaps, indeed, all of us.
