A Review and CONTEST for A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness: Four Chapbooks by Four Women

A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness: Four Chapbooks by Four Women
Published by Rose Metal Press

A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness: Four Chapbooks by Four Women is a triumph for flash fiction. This is not your typical anthology, with one story per author. While those are good too, A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness provides a richer experience. Each author--Amy Clark, Elizabeth Ellen, Kathy Fish, and Claudia Smith--explode onto the page with an entire album of flashes. And as with any album, you'll discover a favorite "song," you'll learn the versatility of the artist--their range. You'll play the album again and again and learn the order of the songs, memorize the lyrics.

Each artist in A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness has a different voice, a distinct style. The book starts out with Kathy Fish's chapbook "Laughter, Applause, Laughter, Music, Applause." It's a wise choice for the lead. Kathy's flash is concise, surprising, and she has a gift for using words that will amaze you. Amy Clark's chapbook, "Waiting," follows. Amy takes more time with her work--her flashes tend to be longer, the timeframe more drawn out. Speaking of time, Amy likes to play with the concept. Many of her stories switch between the past, present, and future tense, which makes for an interesting read. Next up is Elizabeth Ellen with "Sixteen Miles Outside of Phoenix." Elizabeth's work is intimate. She gets right in there and gives you what she's got. Many of her stories focus on relationships and that tumultuous concept called love. Claudia Smith, the winner of Rose Metal Press' first annual chapbook contest, anchors the team with "The Sky is a Well." Claudia has a knack for nailing titles, and her writing is exceptionally eloquent. Like Kathy Fish, childhood is a common theme in her work, and often, her stories illustrate how the world can be a dangerous place for girls.

If you're a fan of flash fiction, A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness is a must-have. But if you're a fan, you already know this. You already know what it feels like to hold such a precious item in your hands. And you know that opening the cover for the first time is akin to that flutter you get during a hot kiss. If you're new to flash, this collection is a great introduction to the form. The stories within are engaging, thought-provoking, strong. They will force you to pay attention, to look closely, and deeply, at the subtleties of life. Like music with metaphor, the stories will demand you listen.

Interested? You can order A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness here, or, you can try and win a copy by entering the "My Own Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness Contest." Details are as follows...

WIN A COPY OF A PECULIAR FEELING OF RESTLESSNESS

In the comments section of this post, share your own "Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness." Be creative. You can write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, lyrics, etc., and interpret the theme widely. The ONE RULE is your entry must not be longer than ONE LINE. And please don't be clever and write three pages without any punctuation. One line, with a reasonable word count.

Universidad Nacional del Comahue
I believe I've mentioned a few times here recently how far behind I am on posting about any number of things. Perhaps the single item about which I've been most negligent has been the Advanced English class at Universidad Nacional del Comahue, taught by Magdalena Zinkgräf. In Magdalena's words, "One of the aims of this course is to help learners (teacher- and translator- trainees in the last years of the programme) to be able to write reviews of short-short stories." To that end, students in her class wrote reviews piece in Issue 17. Magdalena was kind enough to share some of the reviews her students wrote, and I'd like to share here the review we felt was best-written among those, penned by Angélica Verdú. Many thanks to Magdalena and her students.

For long, mainstream literature has been strictly ruled by the Cannon. Yet in today's ever-changing world, who is to say where the artistic lies or even what art is in the first place? No doubt about it, the flash fiction genre engenders the seed that will propel the literary world into a new level where canonical standards will not be the least bit significant, especially when considering that all that matters, these days, is engaging demanding audiences and providing them with a breath of fresh air that transports them out of their quotidian duties, regardless of the way.

Indisputably gifted Claudia Smith surely knows how to weave a masterfully rendered tale that will utterly enchant alert readers with a most strikingly imaginative take on thorny issues such as childhood traumas and sixth senses and Prow is living proof of her unrivalled talent in this respect, as even the title attracts readers' attention from scratch.

Set in an indefinite place and time, this utterly abnormal, bizarre narrative provides a most detailed insight into out-of-the-ordinary Louise Hennesy's supernatural experience when she reports having been threatened with death by a male psychopath during a telephone conversation at the age of 12. Doubting about the actual occurrence of this most unfortunate event as an adult seems to reflect either a possible delusion or an attempt at putting this weird memory off her mind as the lead character in Cadwallader's Oblivious does. Yet, when her mother states she is changing her telephone number, Louise's traumatic fears are taken back to her present day, 20 years later, under the reader's watchful eye.

Clear and intense character portrayals as well as meticulous event reconstruction with a helping of witty dialogues add to the author's crowning achievement in skillfully threading a memorable, artful tapestry that undoubtedly displays Smith's unparalleled writing genius.

All in all, on providing a most grippingly engaging challenge that will leave readers wondering about Prow's true meaning, Smith compels her audience to step up and offer their own interpretations, while feeling they can contribute to the "writing" of the story. Entertaining, evocative, life-changing.

3) It's been a while, but Exquisite Corpse is back and better than ever (with a snazzy redesign which looks sort of like the New York Times site). I like it!

A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness
Oh, man, I've been waiting for this one. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into this book. How much better does it get?

From the Rose Metal Press blurb:

"The four brilliant chapbooks that make up A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness are disarmingly, unabashedly intimate collections by women who know how to tell a story and aren’t afraid to drag the unspoken out into the light of day." –Pia Z. Ehrhardt

The four chapbooks collected in A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness, three of them finalists and one of them the winner of the Rose Metal Press first annual short short chapbook contest, all revel in the succinctness of their form, the underlying tension anchored beneath each story of 1,000 words or less. These stories are peculiar; they resonate with restlessness. They are deft, they are gritty, and they are lyrical. Laughter, Applause, Laughter, Music, Applause by Kathy Fish, Wanting by Amy L. Clark, Sixteen Miles Outside of Phoenix by Elizabeth Ellen, and The Sky Is a Well by Claudia Smith combine four multi-layered portrayals of beautiful uneasiness into a collection rich with wit, grace, and originality.

From me:

Buy it, buy it, buy it. If you buy no other book this year, buy this one. I cannot wait to have it in my hands.

Books! Books! Books!
There are some exciting books coming out soon and I'm sure you'll want a copy of each:

I'm beyond delighted that I will soon have in my possession a copy of A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness! This collection of four chapbooks ( Laughter, Applause, Laughter, Music, Applause by Kathy Fish, Wanting by Amy L. Clark, Sixteen Miles Outside of Phoenix by Elizabeth Ellen, and The Sky Is a Well by Claudia Smith) is sure to please. Here's what the brilliant Pia Z. Ehrhardt has to say about it:
The four brilliant chapbooks that make up A Peculiar Feeling of Restlessness are disarmingly, unabashedly intimate collections by women who know how to tell a story and aren’t afraid to drag the unspoken out into the light of day.

Kim Chinquee is not only a wonderful, supportive person, she's also a talented writer and I'm excited that I will soon own a copy of her forthcoming collection: Oh Baby. To tantalize you further, here's the blurb:
A wonderful debut collection of prose poems and flash fictions, short short stories of beautiful precisions and understated passions. While the bricks with which Chinquee constructs her fictions—failed or failing relationships, childhood friendships, the intricacies of family life—are not uncommon, the architecture she creates with them is rare indeed: stories now full of light, now somber, now opening the reader’s eyes to an utterly new space.

I'm a huge fan of Xujun Eberlin--not just of her writing, but of her person. She is an incredible human being who writes more beautifully and clearly in English than many native speakers. That being said, you will want a copy of her soon-to-be-released book APOLOGIES FORTHCOMINGHere is a blurb from Livingston Press:
A totally illuminating collection of stories centered around China's Cultural Revolution and its aftermath, which, as we learn, continues even today-with both sides still holding out, with "apologies forthcoming." Xujun Eberlein lived in China during that tumultuous period and now makes her home in America. This, her first story collection, is both disturbing and enthralling.

These books not only represent the fine work of some talented women writers, but also they exhibit the quality work put out by small presses. Go on and support 'em, why don't you?
