Smoking With Joseph Young

Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette
""Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette"
by Vincent Van Gogh
What was life like for these two when they had their other names? Do you see them now as blessed or cursed or is that a stupid question?
I don't think they really had much of a life, just your average you or me. Mm, Mary had vague artistic aspirations and a habit of clearing her throat; Skip loved Italian motorcycles. Now they are Patients, blessed and cursed.

"Her pocketful of soil." That's masterful stuff, Mr. Young. Explain Mr. Young's Theory of Images and Image Patterns in Flash Fiction. (Please, just play along on this one.)
My theory (not really mine) is that the human brain tends naturally to pattern, given the leeway. It's the source of the arts in the first place, why we crave them. More specifically to flash I guess, image pattern functions as narrative, one of the places from which story moves.

What's Patient C doing?
I don't know, but it's interesting to speculate on the triangulation he/she would bring. It would probably be the better story.

Yo Joe. Waz up with you these days?
I'm working with my friend Michael Cantor on Baltimore Interview
(www.baltimoreinterview.com), a blog profiling various artists in the Baltimore area.

Time for the first (and perhaps only) SLQ deserted island questionnaire. One CD. One novel. One flash piece. One movie. One very much alive famous person. One very much alive writer. One SLQ editor with the initials R.B.. Go!
What with mp3s these days, how many albums would fit on a CD? Oh, okay, I guess I'll take Abbey Road. For novel I think something big and populated, to keep me company, like Anna Karenina. I started it a couple years ago and liked it a lot, but got distracted. For flash, how about "Gloomy Tune" by Grace Paley? I bet it's the one I've read the most times so far. For movie, Wings of Desire. And I get a famous person, a writer, and an R.B., too? Not much of a deserted isle is it? Do you play an instrument? We could start a band with Ira Kaplan and Adam Gopnik.
